Summary

[edit]
Description Although commonly known as the Philippine Orchid, it is not from the orchid family. It is from the Melastomataceae family. This native of the Philippines is an epiphyte. Living in the forks of large trees, Medinilla can grow to 3m or more. The fantastic inflorescence (group of flowers) grow as branched clusters called panacles up to 50cm long. They cluster within ovoid pink modified leaves called bracts. The fruit is a violet berry. Medinella is widely grown as an ornamental plant throughout the tropics.
