Title
Medieval token: Portuguese Jetton of John II
Description
English: A late Medieval copper alloy Portuguese Jetton, probably dating to the reign of John II (AD 1477-1495). The obverse depicts five square topped shields arranged in a cross, each containing five pellets. The reverse depicts a water-mill wheel with splashes extending to the edge of the flan.

Although badly corroded, a jetton with a very similar reverse is published by Barnard (1923: plt. V, no. 16), which he attributes to the reigns of Alfonso V and John II. In his discussion (ibid: 86-88), Barnard notes that the obverse inscription +CONSERVACIO REX PUBLICAE IN is probably a mistake copied over from inscriptions on coins of John I, and may be intended to read +CONVERVACIO REIPUBLICAE IN. He argues that such an inscription would be more fitting of an attribution to John II, rather than his father.

Barnard (ibid: 75-76) also comments on the rarity of Portuguese jettons, and there are currently only three other examples recorded on this database: <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/445801" title="View details for PUBLIC-C85DE7">PUBLIC-C85DE7</a>, <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/85585" title="View details for SF-FC5C06">SF-FC5C06</a> and <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/89420" title="View details for BERK-C70BA8">BERK-C70BA8</a>, the latter being a lead alloy copy.
