Title
Medieval spoon fragment
Description
English: Treasure Report: Case 2011 T288

Date: 15th-17th century

Description:

A knop, or finial, from a late medieval or post-medieval silver-gilt maidenhead spoon. The knop represents the head and shoulders of a woman with long hair, emerging from a calyx of leaves. Surviving examples date from the 15th to the 17th century. The type may have originated as a representation of the Virgin, but the term 'maidenhead' was commonly used for such spoons in the 16th and 17th century. The knop is broken off at the top of the stem beneath the lap-joint. The gilding is worn and survives mainly in recessed areas.

See M.Snodin, English Silver Spoons (1974), pl 6.

Dimensions:

Max length: 23mm.

The find therefore qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
