Title
medieval spoon
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy spoon, probably 15th century. The spoon has a deep fig-shaped bowl with a makers mark stamped at the top of the bowl near where the stem comes off, the makers mark appears to be a rose although it it slightly corroded so impossible to see clearly. The stem has a sub-ovoid section which may have actually been hexagonal at one time but the edges have corroded away. The spoon has broken into two pieces but was recovered as one. At the end of the spoon is a moulded cone shaped knop, possibly a maidenhead (See Brian Read, Metal artefacts of Antiquity, p.96, Fig.62 No.716). The full length of the spoon is 169mm, the width of the bowl is 47mm and the thickness of the handle or stem is 3.5mm. The spoon weighs 31.76g altogether.
