Summary
[edit]DescriptionMedieval sea-wall - geograph.org.uk - 988449.jpg |
English: Medieval sea-wall This photo is taken from the porch of the church. The figure in the picture has reached the wall at the edge of the churchyard. This wall was, in medieval times, the wall between the churchyard and the harbour. Where there is now undulating fields would have been filled with ships tied up to load and unload. The Black Death and the silting of the river ended Cley's role as a major east-coast seaport. Before then the site was literally Cley-next-the-Sea. |
