Title |
Medieval ring brooch with turrets |
||
Description |
English: Medieval brooch; Cast copper alloy ring brooch with inlaid turrets dating to the 14th century. The brooch has a basic circular shape with ‘turrets’ extending up from the base plate. The turrets are formed as cylinders of copper alloy and show indications of having been inlaid with glass or stones in the top of the cylinders. There are 8 tall turrets, evenly spaced around the ring. There are alternated with 7 smaller turrets, the gap being where the pin is bent around the brooch. The pin is still present and is in the form of a flat, narrow bar of copper alloy which is bent to it does not touches the edge of the brooch at a point which is not opposite its fixing point. It is unclear whether this bend is intentional or as a result of later damage. One of the smaller turrets retains its inlay in the form of a small piece of red-brown stone. The others show remnants of the fixant used to hold their inlays in place. The whole piece has a uniform, smooth, grey-green patina but the patina on the pin is of a much brighter green, indicating that it is formed of a different alloy to the main body of the brooch.
Diameter 26.5mm, thickness (at taller turrets) 5.4mm, thickness (at smaller turrets) 4.2mm, width (pin) 2.2mm, thickness (pin) 1.2mm, weight 6.91g Refs: Norwich Households page 14-15 for illustrations and page 16 for discussion, brooch no 58. Benet page 356 brooch M07-0106 |
