Title |
Medieval purse bar tau cross mount |
||
Description |
English: A near-complete copper alloy purse bar boss mount, likely from the 15th century AD. The mount is a rounded shield shape and is 20.3mm long, 20.9mm wide, made of a copper alloy sheet between 1.1mm and 0.9mm thick, and weighs 3.09g. The reverse of the mount bears a series of parallel diagonal ridges, potentially file marks, overlain by the remnants of the solder used to attach the mount to the purse bar boss. The obverse of the mount is decorated with an engraved tau-cross on an engraved field of hatched lines. The top edge of the mount is damaged, but was once decorated by vertical moulded alternating channels and ridges separated from the main design by a horizontal line. The object has a dark brown patina with traces of corrosion and shows some damage to the upper edge and to the top right of the tau-cross design. The tau cross is the symbol of St Anthony of Egypt and was a popular motif on later medieval purse bars. This mount was likely part of a Ward-Perkins Type A3 purse bar (Ward Perkins 1940). |
