Title
Medieval probable finger ring
Description
English: A fragment of a silver Medieval probable Finger ring probably dating from AD 1200 - 1500.Only the bezel and a small piece of the hoop survives. The bezel is a square flat sheet of silver which is soldered to the hoop. It is decorated with crude incised lines; four or five short oblique lines extend inwards from each edge, and eight slightly longer lines radiate from the centre. It is applied to the hoop on a slight angle. The bezel is 6.9mm long, 7.4mm wide and 0.7mm thick. The hoop is rectangular in section and only a short length survives. The hoop fragment is 9mm long, 2.1mm wide and 1.1mm thick. It is also possible that the fragment is from a dress hook or cap hook of late Medieval to Post Medieval date. Too little survives to be certain.

It can be compared to a 14th century silver gilt finger ring, IOW-0723C2, which is much more fine, but has a similar style applied bezel. Also HAMP-245736, a 15th century finger ring, again, with a similar bezel. NLM-A97266 is thought to be 12th or 13th century and is a silver finger ring with an applied bezel and a similar, plain hoop. Finally, similar square decorative plaques are also found applied on dress fittings, such as SWYOR-2D3FE1.
