Title |
Medieval lyre shaped buckle |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete late medieval large copper alloy buckle frame of which only the outer edge survives. It is very similar to an example from London in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue 1967, p.270, fig.85, no.1. The frame of these buckles is sometimes described as 'lyre' shaped. The inner edge of the outer edge of the loop is kidney shaped and the sides of the frame are angled towards each other and would have joined at the bar which is missing. The apex of the outer edge has a groove to act as a pin rest, and a bi-concave area of decoration on the outer edge of the frame. The outer edges of the sides of the frame also have projecting decoration; a wide trilobed projection containing a series of circular depressions. The buckle dates from the15th century. Compare
