Title
Medieval lead alloy shoe buckle
Description
English: An incomplete Medieval lead alloy shoe buckle dating 1350-1450. The shape of this buckle is distorted and the cross bar is broken and the two edges pulled apart. The iron pin is missing.

Egan & Pritchard (1991:86) illustrate very similar examples which they write "seem to have been used regularly for pattens (open-style footwear in which two leather side elements are joined by straps across the instep)". All of the published examples come from contexts dating 1350-1450.

Dimensions: length: 24.50mm; width: 18.31mm; thickness: 3.31mm; weight: 2.95g.
