Title
Medieval horse shoe
Description
English: An iron late-Medieval-Post Medieval (AD c.1350-c.1700) horseshoe. The horseshoe is smaller than average for the period, measuring 94.90mm long, 99.70mm wide 6.60mm thick (not including the nails). It weighs 166.87g. However, many of its characterisitics are consistent with horseshoes dating from the mid-14th century (Clark, 1986, 'Medieval Horseshoes', in Finds Research Group 700-1700: Datasheet 4). The horseshoe has a wide web. The nail holes are rectangular and taper in profile. They are arranged four on each side. Two of the holes still contain nails. One has an intact point which tapers to a flat chisel edge. The other has a more intact shank which is rectangular in section (9.30mm x 5.55mm). The heels do not have calkins and are not feathered, but instead of ending perpendicular to the edges, the ends are angled slightly so that there is a slight point on the inner edge.
