Title
Medieval double-looped asymmetrical buckle
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy double-looped medieval buckle frame, asymmetrical, formed of two loops (c. 15th century AD). It has one large oval loop and one smaller rectangular loop; the bar between them is narrowed for the (missing) pin. The oval loop is triangular in section with a bevelled outer side and a notch for the pin at the centre of the outer side. The rectangular loop is square in section. The bar between the loops expands towards the centre where there is a narrowed notch, presumably for the pin.

Egan and Pritchard (1991, 103; ref. 472) illustrate a similar example above another example with the strap intact which indicates that, unlike later double-looped buckles, the strap looped around the outer bar of the rectangular loop rather than the central bar.
