Title
Medieval copper alloy buckle, 1100-1200.
Description
English: Medieval copper 'standing animal' type alloy buckle, c.1100-1300AD. Length: 35 mm, Width: 40 mm, thickness: 13 mm, weight: 38.84 grams.
The object is sub recatngular in form and cross section and takes the form of a backwards facing dog or lion. It has a thin body with pronounced shoulders and thighs. It has a tail which runs between its hind legs and across its body from under its right side, and into its mouth, before turning to point backwards with its tip resting on its rump. The terminal is formed of a curved openwork frame with scrolls and circular holes, which fans across its back. When viewed from above, the area where the tail touches its back is flanked by an oval area filled with radiating linear incisions. The body is decorated all over, but is clearer on one side. The beast has a series of parallell lines incised into its body and front legs which are decorated with rows of short transverse incisions. It has a mouth definded by a curved depression on both sides of its muzzle and has rounded upwards facing ears on the top of its head. Running down the back of its neck and between its front legs are two rows of diagonal incisions representing a mane? These are flanked by three deep triangular depressions on each side covering its shoulders and neck (which may be un paralleled?) . Its legs are circular in cross section and taper in width, but are missing their feet. The underside of the beast is plain except for two transverse incised lines running across its belly inside its legs. The object is a buckle frame and should have a bar between its legs to house the pin.

The object is similar, but more ornately decorated, to LEIC-E0C8F1 which was remarkably found by the same person in a differnet location.
