Title
Medieval combined earscoop and nail cleaner / toothpick
Description
English: Date: 14th-15th century

Description:

A Medieval gilded sheet silver combined earscoop and toothpick or nail cleaner with tightly S-twisted shank. One end is hammered into an oval scoop, the other is flat with the tip broken off horizontally; it probably originally formed a point.

Dimensions: Length 61.7mm, width 4.7mm, thickness 2.4mm, weight 2.24g.

Discussion:

See Egan & Pritchard (1991) nos. 1758-1762 for similar cosmetic implements from excavated contexts dated to the 14th century, and TAR 2005/6 no.397 for a close parallel.

The object fulfils the Treasure Act (1996) in that it is more than 300 years old and has a precious metal content exceeding 10%.
