Title
Medieval coin : Cut halfpenny of John
Description
English: A medieval short cross cut halfpenny of John, class 5c, London mint, moneyer Ilger. The coin is interesting as it has had one previous attempt to cut it into a halfpenny from a full penny, as shown by the cut mark across it. This cut mark is outside the voided cross and would not have given an accurate halfpenny. It also shows that the cut was made by a single, downward, chopping stroke rather than a rolling cut, such as from a guillotine, as the cut is even in depth along its length.
