Title
Medieval buckle with remains of gilt buckle plate
Description
English: Medieval buckle; cast copper alloy D-shaped buckle of probable 14th or 15th century date, with buckle plate and pin still remaining and traces of gilding. The buckle frame expands at the outer edge and has a narrowed and slightly off-set pin bar. The buckle plate is formed of a single sheet of copper alloy folded around the pin bar. Where the buckle plate would attach to the front of the strap, it is the same width as the buckle frame but the back sheet of the buckle plate is narrower, retaining the width of the pin bar. The buckle plate has two broad, circular rivet holes near the pin bar to fix it to the strap, one of which still retains its copper alloy rivet. One side of the front of the buckle plate is broken off and missing. The pin is still present. There are traces of gilding on the buckle frame, the pin and the front of the buckle plate. Total length 33.1mm, length of plate 8.7mm, width 32.5mm, thickness of plate 7.4mm, thickness 3.7mm, weight: 8.87g
