Title |
Medieval buckle with integral plate |
||
Description |
English: Medieval buckle; cast copper alloy single loop, oval buckle with composite plate dating from the period c.1350-1450. The buckle frame is sub-circular and is rather rough. There is a gap for the pin, which is now missing. The buckle frame extends on both sides into the buckle plate, presumably in the form of an integral forked spacer. The plate itself is formed of two separate sheets of copper alloy attached to the front and back of the spacer. There are two rivets, one near the gap for the pin and the other near the back end of the buckle plate. Both rivets are still present. There is also an organic substance, probably leather, remaining within the buckle plate.
Length 45.8mm, width (buckle frame) 25.2mm, width (buckle plate) 16.3mm, thickness 4.9mm, weight 11.63g Ref: See Whitehead pages 36 and 37, especially buckles 215 and 217. |
