Title
Medieval buckle plate
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy buckle plate of Medieval date (c. AD 1200-1500). The plate is made from a single strip of flat copper-alloy sheet that has been folded and cut at one end to form two rectangular plates that would have folded around the axis bar of the buckle frame. Beneath this attachment is a circular sectioned rivet that extends through the upper plate and connects to the short length of round-ended sheet that comprises the backplate on the reverse. The opposing end of the upper plate is squared and has two circular attachment holes, the rivets for which are missing. The upper surface of this plate is plain except for an uneven single-lined border around the edges. The underside of the plate, as well as both surfaces of the shorter second plate, are flat and undecorated. The entire object has mid-brown patination.

The plate measures 37.5mm long, 13.8mm wide and 3.1mm tick (each plate is 1.8mm thick). The rivet has a maximum diameter of 3mm diameter, and the rivet holes 1mm diameter. The buckle plate weighs 3.20 grams.
