Description |
English: Medieval cast copper alloy brooch/buckle pin, incomplete, 13th/14th century. Most of the loop is broken off (old break); raised collar (length 9.1mm) by the loop, decorated with 4 transverse grooves; square-sectioned pin; the end of the pin is flattened and curved on the underside to sit on the frame, an is correspondingly convex on the upper side. Dark brown patina. Length 51.7mm, width 4.6mm, max thickness (across collar) 5.9mm, weight 5.89g. The internal diameter of the brooch was c.38mm.
See Egan and Prictchard 1991 ('Dress Accessories', HMSO) p.115-6, fig 75, for similar buckle pins, in particular no.s547 and 541. These are dated to 1270-1400. |
