Medieval buckle pin |
||
Description |
English: A medieval copper-alloy pin from an annular buckle of Margeson's disc-on-tongue (or disc-on-pin) type. It has an integral rounded sub-lozengiform plate occupying the majority of the central section of the pin, the front face of which has a border groove. The plate also has four large bi-conical dome-headed decorative rivets through it, which are evenly spaced; there is no central rivet. Projecting from one end of the plate is a loop and from the other a tapering shank. The pin measures 34.99mm in length and 20.41mm in width across the plate, there are traces of gilding. It is uncertain how these enigmatic objects would have functioned as pins. Other examples include two from Norfolk, see NMS-892006, from Bracon Ash and NMS-CD35B2, from Hoe, there is also one illustrated in Middle Harling, Norfolk (miss-identified as a hooked tag) (EAA 74 fig.39, no.490). Suffolk examples include SF-99DC91, from Wattisham, SF-A79EA4, from Great Barton and SF-3E0013, from Isleham. |
