Title
Medieval buckle (front and reverse view).
Description
English: The buckle frame is made from cast copper alloy and is complete. It measures 26.2mm in length from side edge to side edge. The width from the apex of the loop to the strap bar is 19.5mm. Its weight is 6.35g.

In plan the frame is a sub-oval shape. The strap bar is off-set and is sub-circular in section. The strap bar is flanked by two moulded, protruding rounded knops. One of which has a longitudinal groove running down its outside edge. The edge opposite the strap bar is ornately moulded with four lobed knops. The two outer knops protrude out slightly more than the inner knops and are undecorated. The central knops are flanked on either side by a single ridge. The side edges are sub-oval in section. The pin is sub-rectangular in section and has been cast. A rectangular shaped portion of the pin is curled around the strap bar, while the pin is created by folding the metal over to form a blunt point. The pin terminal protrudes to rest on the loop. The buckle is a dark matt grey colour with no patina and is in a fair condition.

A buckle which is identical to the recorded example can be found in Ottaway and Rogers (Ottaway, P. and Rogers, N. 2002. Craft, Industry and Everyday Life: Finds from Medieval York. Volume 17: The Small Finds. CBA: York) fig. 1466, no. 13337. Egan and Pritchard (Egan, G and Pritchard, F. 1991 Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3. Dress Accessories c.1150 – c.1450, HMSO, London, p.76) suggest that these type of buckles date to the late 12th to late 14th centuries.
