Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy medieval composite buckle, with a frame, integral forked spacer and pin, but missing two sheet plates. The frame is oval in shape, with its external dimensions measuring 19.3mm wide and 15.7mm long (internal dimensions of 14.8mm x 11.5mm). There is a small trainagulr protrusion to the outside edge of the frame; it does not have a notch for the pin. The pin is made of wire and is of a different copper alloy compared to the rest of the buckle. It is incomplete and missing its tip.

The forked spacer is 13.3mm in width at the point it joins with the frame. On the outer edge of the buckle there is a diagonal tooling mark at the point where it meets the frame. There is a concretion (probably solder) on both sides of the forked spacer. The spacer arms are probably both slightly foreshortened, the longer measuring 18.1mm in length and the shorter 18.4mm in length.

The entire object is 34.1mm in length and weighs 4.49g. A comparable buckle has been found from London, published in in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 79; fig.48, no. 323). Egan & Pritchard comment, 'These buckles with their distinctive composite plates seem to have been a widespread mid 14th to early 15th century form in this country' (1991; p.80).
