Title
Medival buckle
Description
English:

A incomplete cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle frame and pin, of late Medieval dating (c.1400 to 1600 AD).

The buckle frame consists of approximately half of a double looped oval buckle frame. The pin is present, consisting of a piece of sheet copper alloy metal, tapering to a point, and bent around the central bar. No evidence of a pin rest is present on the surviving side. The edges of the buckle frame are raised higher than the central bar.

The buckle is a mid to dark green, with an uneven surface patina. Clay soil is still present adhering to a significant proportion of the surface.

The buckle frame measures 17.5mm in length, 21.9mm wide and 3.5mm thick. The pin measures 11.9mm in length, 4.1mm wide and 1.5mm thick. It weighs 2.0 grams.

Double loop oval buckles are a common find and there are a number of similar published examples (Whitehead, 2003, p55, #312; Egan, 2002, p86, fig 53, #370 & #375). They are dated to the later medieval period (c.1400 - c.1600 AD) and are typically considered to have been used as fastenings for shoes.
