Title |
Medieval annular buckle pin (probably) |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy pin now independent of its frame, probably from a medieval annular buckle. It is solidly cast, with a cross-section in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. The oval loop is broken such that around two-thirds of it survives. There is a rectangular ridge at the junction of the loop and the shaft. This is decorated with three transverse incisions, creating four ridges. The pin tapers slightly to a rounded tip. The object has now corroded to a mid-green colour. The loop has been bent to one side; the shaft has been bent in the same direction below the collar, almost through ninety degrees. The size of this object points to this being an example of a buckle pin as opposed to a brooch pin. Examples illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 115; fig. 75) date to around the 14th century AD. |
