Title |
Medieval Strap End |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete medieval copper alloy composite strap end, probably once with a forked spacer. What remains consists of an ovoid cast spacer with a knop, two outer sheet plates with open centres, and an extra probably cast piece on the rear of the knop. There is a rivet through the knop and another near the break which cuts through all three elements. The spacer is solid, and where exposed by the apertures in the sheet plates is decorated with three sunken circular fields, each enclosing five drilled holes, and with seventeen smaller blind-drilled holes on the front face. There would have been another cast piece on the front of the knop, so that, without the rivets, the complete object would have been composed of five separate elements. Cf. SWYOR-050B94, which is made from three elements and whose spacer, though decorated similarly, is exposed on the front face only.
Extant length 32.7mm. Width 23.7mm. 14th century. |
