Title
Medieval Probable Pendant (fragment)
Description
English: TREASURE CASE 2013 T156: Medieval Jewellery Fragment (Gold sheet & Cabochon stone)

Date: 13th to 15th century (c.1200-1500)

Description: A Medieval gold sheet and cabochon gemstone fragment of a larger decorative item, probably a piece of jewellery such as an annular brooch or pendant. The cabochon stone is deep red in colour and may be a garnet, the stone is oval in plan with faint facets, created during polishing, visible on the upper surface; the gold sheet casing prevents full observations on the stone.

The gold sheet casing is closely fitted around the stone in the form of a petal or teardrop with a pointed outer tip and rounded base. The sheet casing is pressed flat along the underside of the stone and then folds up the sides of the stone being pinched together at one end to form the pointed tip of the teardrop shape; the opposite end of the casing is the point at which the item has been broken and the edges are ragged and irregular. An overlap in the gold sheet casing is notable on the underside of this item.

Dimensions: Length: 10.13 mm; Width: 7.33 mm; Thickness: 3.67 mm; Weight: 0.6 g
