Title |
Medieval Lead Shoe Buckle |
||
Description |
English: A cast lead shoe buckle of late Medieval date. It has a circular frame with flat back face and raised bevelled band on the front face with beading around the outer edge. At the centre of the frame is an integral bar that is cylindrical in section with a constriction at its centre where the now missing pin originally hinged. The bar is slightly bent due to use wear. This buckle measures 24.20mm in diameter, 2.92mm in thickness, and weighs 4g.
A near identical buckle is published from London (Egan and Pritchard, 1991: no. 227) that is identified as belonging to a group of lead-tin shoe buckles of relatively standardised form. These buckles appear in excavated contexts dating to the 15th century AD and suggest a similar date range for the current example (see Egan and Pritchard, 1991: pp. 66-67). |
