Title
Medieval Buckle Pin
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy buckle pin of Medieval date (c. AD 1350 – c. AD 1400). Length: 43.7mm; width: 4.3mm and maximum thickness: 5.0mm. Weight: 3.53g.

The pin is roughly the same width throughout its length. The sides and undersides of the shaft are flat and the upper face is convex.

As viewed from the side, the shaft tapers slightly from the loop towards the tip. The tip of the pin has no undercut and the shaft terminates with a rounded point. On the top of the shaft, near the junction between the loop and the shaft, there is a single narrow transverse ridge (square in plan) with a transverse groove to the rear of it. The loop does not fully enclose. Consequently, there is a space between the end of the loop and the underside of the shaft.

This pin is has no patina and is severely corroded in places. File marks are barely visible on each side of the shaft.

Similar buckle pins from archaeological excavations in London have been dated c. 1350-1400 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 115-116, fig. 75, refs. 541, 547 and 549).
