Title
Medieval Annular Buckle
Description
English: A copper alloy annular buckle probably dating from the Medieval period, about AD 1150 - 1250. It has a circular frame with an integral central bar and two hooked projections extending from the outer edge diametrically opposite each other.

There is a sheet metal plate, square, but probably broken at the attachment end, and tapering to a rounded point at the other end which forms the backplate. It is folded around the pin bar and notched to take a sheet copper alloy pin, which remains in place, also looped round the pin bar. The buckle has a patchy, dark green patina.

A similar artefact with a circular frame and opposing hooked extensions is illustrated in Saunders, 2012, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Medieval Catalogue, Volume 4, figure 13, number 8 and is attributed to the early to mid-thirteenth century.
