English: New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal (type a) Medal awarded to Captain TJ Thompson, Port Chalmers Naval Artillery Volunteers. circular silver medal, 37mm diameter, loop and ring suspension, with ribbon obverse- a royal crown superimposed over a crossed sword and taiaha on a cushion, initials below cushion- N x Z, two stars either side and one above the crown, all inside tied wreath of oak leaves and acorns (lhs) and fern fronds (rhs) reverse- inscription in lines- FOR LONG AND EFFICIENT SERVICE ribbon 38 mm wide, crimson in colour with two central white stripes, which were added in 1917 ribbon- grosgrain, 38mm wide, crimson with two white stripes at centre (introduced 1917) named on edge- CAPT. T.J. THOMSON PT CHALMERS NAVAL ARTY. VOLS. markings- obverse- medallist's name below bow- S KOHN
