Notes Belgian Orphan Fund 1914-1918 commemorative medal, WW1 The Belgian Orphan Fund was set up in the United Kingdom by Belgian Consul J.P. Andre Mottu. At the end of the war the fund was used to establish the Bierbais agricultural and horticultural school for orphans at Mont Saint Guibert, Belgium. Sir James Allen, previously New Zealand's Minister of Defence and now New Zealand's High Commissioner in London, attended the opening of the Agricultural and Horticultural School and Homes in Belgium in August 1922. In his speech he noted the donations made by the people of New Zealand for relief purposes overseas. A sum of £607,917 had been raised for Belgian relief funds including £23,161 for the Belgian Orphan Fund. reference- Press, Volume LVIII, Issue 17541, 24 August 1922, page 10 (http-paperspast.natlib.govt.nz-cgi-bin-paperspast.a=d&d=CHP19220824.2.100&cl=&srpos=0&e=-10-1-0-&st=1)
