Notes Victory Medal, WW1 Medal (part of set) awarded to 18423 WO2 William Thomas Burr, Wellington Mounted Rifles, NZEF. William Thomas Burr DCM (1872 - 1940) Company-Sergeant-Major of the Wairoa Mounted Rifles prior to Anglo-Boer War. Burr served in Anglo-Boer War, Colour Sergeant No.3 and with Wellington MR in Egypt. Summary of service- SAWar- 1st and 6th NZMR WW1- 23rd Reinf. Wellington MR, DCM 29.9.1901. Biographical details- Sgt Major William Thomas (Billy) Burr, DCM (14.12.1872-17.10.1940) Service- 1897- While serving with the Wairoa Rifles Burr was selected as part of the New Zealand Contingent to attend the Jubilee celebrations in London. South Africa (1899-1902)- Before leaving for South Africa with the first Contingent NZMR on 21 October 1899 Burr was Company-Sergeant-Major of the Wairoa Mounted Rifles, having served in this corps for almost nine years. He was appointed Regimental Sergeant-Major of the First, Second and Third Contingents to South Africa, and acted as such for seven months in South Africa. When he returned to New Zealand, on the 26 January 1901, he was appointed Staff Sergeant-Major to take charge of the No.1 Mounted Battalion, Wanganui. (St Clair Inglis, p.10). He saw action at Diamond Hill, Johannesburg, Driefontein and the Relief of Kimberley. He received a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his service in South Africa. DCM (London Gazette 27-10-01). Citation reads- “In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa, to be dated 29 September 1901.” WW1- Following his return from South Africa Billy Burr transferred to the permanent staff, a position he retained until 1911. When WW1 broke out Billy Burr was living with his wife in Wanganui. He enlisted for service in 1916, and left New Zealand with the 23rd Reinforcements (Mounted Rifles) on 19 April 1917 to serve in Egypt with the Wellington Mounted Rifles. Discharged 24 December 1918 due to illness.
