English: Victory Medal, 1914-19, WW1 Part of mounted medal set of 2-1233 Gnr John William Harkin, NZ Field Artillery, NZEF. circular bronze medal with ribbon; fixed loop and ring suspension obverse- the winged, full-length figure of Victory, with her arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand reverse- inscription- ‘THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION, 1914-1919’ surrounded by a wreath ribbon- watered colours of red, yellow, green, blue and violet merging into a rainbow pattern named on edge- 2-1233 GNR. J.W. HARKIN. N.Z.E.F.

Notes Victory Medal, 1914-19, WW1 Named to 2-1233 Gnr John William Harkin, NZ Field Artillery, NZEF, WW1 John Harkin enlisted at Trentham Camp on 20 December 1914 and served as a Gunner in the Howitzer Battery, NZFA. He embarked from NZ on 14-2-1915; during service on Gallipoli became ill and admitted to Hospital ship at Anzac Cove on 6 June 1915 and then to 1st Australian Gen. Hospital, Cairo on 12 June 1915. After a short time in convalescent camp he was invalided back to NZ as permanently unfit and discharged on 25 September 1915 on medical grounds. Died at Te Aroha on 6 October 1917.
