"Major Heaphy's Maori War medal" New Zealand Medal awarded to Major Charles Heaphy, NZ Wars Medal gazetted 1871; ref 813 Major Charles Heaphy, VC Born 1820 in London; joined the New Zealand Company as a Staff Surveyor and arrived in New Zealand aboard the Tory in 1840. Spent some time exploring parts of the South Island; 1860 surveyed route for Waikato Military road; 1863 joined Auckland Rifle Volunteers; also with Auckland Engineer Volunteers and later with the New Zealand Militia. Later to Australia and died in Brisbane in 1881. Military Service- Auckland Rifle Volunteers- joined No 2 Coy (10-1858-), Lieutenant No 6 Coy (29-6-1863-17-8-1863); Captain No 3 Company (18-8-1863-10-2-1864), Major (11-2-1864-) Actions- Lower Waikato, Paternagi, Mangapiko Decorations- Awarded Victoria Cross for action at Waiari 11-2-1864) |
