Notes | 1914-15 Star, WW1 Medal awarded to 6-3482 Sgt. Arthur Cecil William Stone, Canterbury Regiment, NZEF Arthur Stone, originally from South Africa was employed as a labourer at Paroa near Greymouth at the time of his enlistment. He embarked with C Coy, 8th Reinforcements on 13th November 1915, bound for Suez. He joined the 1st Battalion Canterbury Infantry Regiment at Ismailia on 4th January 1916 and 3 months later embarked on the Franconia from Port Said, bound for France. In July 1916, while based at Armentieres Arthur Stone was attached to the Army Pay Staff. The following year he was transferred to the Divisional Employment Coy. and posted to strength. During the third battle of Ypres Private Stone was admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, wounded by a mustard gas shell. He was transferred to 7 General Hospital and two months evacuated to England. On 4th January 1918 he was admitted to the Military Hospital at Emdell Street, London, and 10 days later to Hornchurch Convalescent Hospital. Following his discharge Private Stone was detailed to the Pay Department and in August that year was transferred to the NZ Army Pay Corps with the rank of Temporary Corporal. He achieved the rank of Sergeant before returning to new Zealand on the Geissen on 23rd June 1919. Following his return he was employed at the Ruakura Farm of Instruction Hamilton East. He died in Auckland on 2nd March 1932. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
