He plays baseball andcurls. He curls so well that he wonthe Consolation trophy at the last TwinCity bonspiel—no mean feat, either. Inthe Twin Cities most of the male popu-lation find that business in the wintertime interferes so seriously with curlingthat they just have to give up theirbusiness. Anyone who can snag off atrophy from that crowd of frozen pas-ture pool experts is a pretty good curler, But you meet the real John Marshallwhen you find him in his library at home.He will probably be buried in a volumeof Les Miserables or right up to theears in Shakespeare or Dickens orThackeray. He knows books and cantalk them by the hour and he has all theauthors duly placed and ticketed fromCharles Dickens down.

Jack Marshall is a sort of octagonalchap—Many sided. Collecting books, has been his hobby.At one stage of his career, his time wasdivided up something like:—One, third,work; one third, eating, sleeping, etc.;one third listening to book agents andinscribing signatures on dotted lines. Itis said that book agents invariably tookthe same beat from the station. Thequestion was put to one of them once:—Where are you going? Dontknow, was the response. Im fol-lowing the chalk marks that I find atevery corner. They were put there bythe last man around. What dothey mean? Dead cinch ahead. Getthere quick, was the reply. The trailled him to the residence of one Mar-shall, John of that ilk. He has so large a library now that hehas kind of lost count but estimatesthat there are about 2,000 books in all.There is only a space of a few squarefeet left in the room.
