Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in the 1869, this Italianate-style house was constructed by Dixon Brown, a merchant who lived in Somerset, Ohio, as a wedding present for his daughter, Ella Brown McCune, and her husband, whom lived in Newark. The McCune family owned the house until 1879, when it was purchased by Melville O. Baker, whom lived in the house until 1893, when he moved to Coshocton, Ohio and founded the Coshocton National Bank shortly thereafter. From 1893 until 1945, the house was the residence of Doctor Claude A. Stimson and his wife, whom operated a medical practice next door. The house then was sold to the Merrill-Montgomery family, whom owned it until 1975. In 1975, the house was purchased by J. Gilbert Reese and his wife, whom restored the house. As there is not any of the names of the wives of many of these men listed on the historical marker in front of the house, only Ella Brown McCune is mentioned. The house features a red brick exterior, rusticated stone base, low-slope hipped roof with deep overhanging eaves, an asymmetrically placed tower with a mansard roof, arched wall dormers, cast iron cresting, brick corbeling above the third floor windows, stone decorative window headers and stone sills, a double front entry door with an arched decorative glass transom, decorative header, and stone stoop, a two-story bay window on the side facade, one-over-one windows, and a shorter rear ell with simpler detailing. The house is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
