Summary
[edit]DescriptionMatching Aerodrome - geograph.org.uk - 260801.jpg |
English: Matching Aerodrome This is one of the perimeter tracks of the former RAF Matching. It is currently used as a flying club runway. I assume from the size of the hangars that micro lights are the main types operated. RAF Matching was laid out during 1943 It was transferred from RAF to USAAF command in March of 1944 however the first USAAF B26 Bombers had arrived in January of that year. After only a few months operations the base was placed under care and maintenance It was then used as a glider training base a few aircraft from here took part in operation varsity see www.army.mod.uk/para/history/rhine.htm . The base was returned to agriculture soon after the war, however the control tower remains extant at 260824. For more info on RAF matching see http://merlinsroared.tripod.com/id2.html To go to the next field in an alphabetical tour of Essex WW2 airfields click on 268934. Much information was gleaned from Graham Smiths book Essex Airfields In The Second World War.http://www.countrysidebooks.co.uk/book-catalogue-category.php?category=44 |
