Description
English: Massey Ferguson MF 6480 tractor with dumper at River Eden near Lazonby, Cumbria, England. – Dumped rocks block up a bluff with sand martin (Riparia riparia) nests. The bluff was naturally formed by water erosion and represents a habitat of ecological value, but appears as grassland damage and loss of usable ground on the other side. – As well as the person talking in the photo, two women on this side of the river took photos and said they'd reported the incident to the police Wildlife Crime Officer. I estimate that there are 3 loads of rocks dumped in this photo. The hero of the hour, Ros, the woman in orange, persuaded the worker ("just doing his job") to dump the rocks to the left of the current pile and not come back later. The farmer/landowner later spoke to Ros and was apparently persuaded that it was not the right thing to do. – The River Eden is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In 1997 the "River Eden and Tributaries Site of Special Scientific Interest" (SSSI) was declared under the British Wildlife and Countryside Act. It's Unit 224.
