Sat 23 Nov 1895 Messrs. Marsh and Webster. "The Corner Perhaps the best-known business premises in Mackay, the steps of which are worn away by the constant tread of customers, is "The Corner," owned and occupied by Messrs. Marsh and Webster, one of the oldest established firms not only in Mackay but in North Queensland. The firm rightfully assumes the title of "Universal Providers," and they hold within the walls of their stores nearly everything necessary for the well-being of man and beast. The householder, the farmer, the sugar planter, and the "general gentleman," can each and all have their wants supplied, of course for a consideration. Drapers, grocers, ironmongers, produce dealers, wine and spirit merchants, in short universal providers are Messrs. Marsh and Webster. The business was originally started in Bown as far back as 1863, but gravitated to Mackay in 1869, when the prospects of Bowen were not of the brightest. Since that year "The Corner" has been a feature of the town, and the business has grown to remarkable dimensions. Queensland State Archives Image ID 25623 |
