Description

A chorten and prayer flags greet visitors to Markah.

Prayer flags are an integral part of the Ladakh landscape, seen on hilltops, trees and buildings. The flags are often white in color, representing purity of thought and are supposed to carry the prayers of the faithful on the wings of the wind. These prayer flags are of four types; those for luck are long and narrow victory banners which have a substantial amount of text on them whereas others bear the symbol of the Dorje (thunderbolt). The Wind Horse flags depict a horse with a jewel on its back.

In ancient times, chortens (Tibetan for stupas) were built as relic holders but now are mainly built to honor the living Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. Chortens are shaped to symbolize the five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air and ether. The rectangular base represents the earth. The next somewhat circular one being water, the conical section symbolizes fire, topped by a crescent representing air, with the oval right at the top, being ether.

The five elements of nature are a long since disproved belief, however; the chortens are still built in the same shapes to honor longstanding tradition.
