Summary
[edit]DescriptionMarkRolle HuishChurchyard Devon.jpg |
English: Gravestone of Hon Mark Rolle (1835-1907) of Stevenstone, St Giles-in-the-Wood, Devon, south side of churchyard of Church of St James the Less, Huish, Devon. Huish remains the manor and chief seat of the Trefusis family, Barons Clinton, of Heanton Satchville, Huish. Inscribed in metal lettering: In loving memory of Mark George Kerr Rolle, 2nd son of 19th Baron Clinton. Born 13 Nov. 1835; Died 27 April 1907. On the south side is likewise inscribed: And of Gertrude Jane Rolle his wife, died 21st March 1924 aged ... years. Having become the adoptive heir of the last Baron Rolle, and having inherited his vast estates, at his death Mark Rolle was thus reclaimed by the Trefusis family, and rather than having been buried at the parish church of the Rolle manor of St Giles-in-the-Wood, he was placed at Huish, in a simple grave next to his other blood relatives. Grander monuments were placed in the churchyards of Great Torrington and St Giles in the Wood, namely large stone crosses. Mural monuments to him survive in the churches of St Giles in the Wood and St Michael's Church, Beer, in Devon. |
