Description

Mariage orthodoxe dans la cathédrale Haghios Minas

La ville d'Héraklion est à l'emplacement du port antique de Cnossos.

Les Arabes qui ont pris la Crète en 824 fortifièrent la ville. Le nom arabe du fossé autour des remparts (Khandak) est devenu Candia pour les latins.

Les vénétiens (1204-1669) construisirent de nouveaux remparts pourvus de bastions toujours visibles.
