Description

Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717), deutsche Biologin und Künstlerin. - Büste von Georg Hüter (2003) aus Carrara-Marmor im Senkenberg Museum, Frankfurt.

Beschriftung: Von Maria Sibylla Merian ist lediglich ein Altersbildnis bekannt, ein Kupferstich des Jakob Houbraken. Er geht zurück auf eine lavierte Federzeichnung ihres Schwiegersohnes Georg Gsell.

Das von Jakob Houbraken (1698 Dordrecht - 1780 Amsterdam) gestochene Bildnis erschien erstmals 1717 in der holländischen Ausgabe des "Raupenbuchs". Es bildet die Grundlage für diese Büste, die anläßlich der Einrichtung dieses Saales bei dem Bildhauer Georg Hüter in Auftrag gegeben wurde.
