Summary
[edit]DescriptionMapperton, The Posy Tree - geograph.org.uk - 1369480.jpg |
English: Mapperton, The Posy Tree Since other photos, the plaque has disappeared; the dead sycamore is however still of interest, as it is riddled with woodworm & mining wasps.
The full story, according to Derrick Warren, "Curious Dorset" (2004), is as follows: the villagers of Mapperton had their own parish church, but the ground was not suitable for a churchyard, so they used to take bodies to neighbouring Netherbury for burial. When bubonic plague struck Mapperton in 1666, bodies needed to be buried, but Netherbury villagers, bearing posies to ward off the plague, met their neighbours to stop their progress. Mapperton bodies were then taken for burial on Warren Hill, in unconsecrated ground, but within sight of their church. Mapperton did not recover, and is now only a scattered hamlet. |
