Summary
[edit]DescriptionManhattan Mini Storage FDR Drive from Brooklyn Bridge (6387748277).jpg |
For the first time ever, I am taking the pedestrian walkway that runs down the middle of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. This affords excellent views of New York City, at some of the most memorable angles, for free; the people-watching is just as great. One of the locations of Manhattan Mini Storage, seen from Brooklyn Bridge. This storage chain's politically provocative advertising is quite an eye catcher throughout Manhattan. Of course, it bears remembering that New York State legalized same-sex marriage in June 2011, and unlike in California where religious extremists from out-of-state and overseas could pour a fortune into a ballot initiative to undo the legalization, that will not be an option in New York State. In the foreground is Franklin Delano Roosevelt Drive (usually referred to as "FDR Drive"), named after the four-term President, which is the limited-access motorway running along the east side of Manhattan. In the New York City area, a limited-access motorway is labeled as an "Expressway" if it is open to commercial and truck traffic, and a "Parkway" if it is open only to noncommercial cars and light trucks; FDR Drive is classified as a Parkway. The standard US nomenclature for a limited-access motorway is "freeway," with "tollway" also used for toll roads, but the word "freeway," although technically correct to use for New York City area expressways, is actually never used by New Yorkers. Although Los Angeles is normally the city best known for its freeways and automotive culture, and most New Yorkers do not even own a car, New York City's expressways and parkways actually form a more extensive network than Los Angeles's. |
