CLASSIFICATION: Mammal, Cercopithecidae HABITAT: Mandrills are found primarily in rainforests, also forested savannah, and montane and thick secondary forests up to 6,571 ft. (2,000 meters). THREATS: Habitat destruction, hunting, bushmeat trade. Diet: omnivorous, eating primarily fruits, seeds, fungi, and roots, supplemented with insects, reptiles, and other small animals. If food is scarce, they may raid crops and plantations. ECOLOGY: Multi male- multi female, 1male-multi female, solitary. Fission-fusion. Group size: 3 - 63 ind. Mandrills are the largest monkey species and one of the most colorful. They resemble baboons, but DNA studies show they are more closely related to mangabey monkeys. They inhabit west central Africa, inhabiting Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and Congo, with the largest population in Gabon. |

Communication: Mandrills use their teeth to express a variety of emotions. For example, they may flash their teeth as a friendly gesture, use their sharp canines for defense, or yawn as a warning not to approach.
Speed: Mandrills can run up to 25 mph, which is similar to the top speed of a human.
Lifespan: In the wild, mandrills can live up to 20 years, but in managed care settings like zoos, they can live up to 40 years. Females mature between 4 and 7 years old, while males mature at around 9 years old.
