Summary
[edit]DescriptionMandaic Incantation Bowl.jpg |
English: Mesopotamia, Sassanid Empire, 5th-6th century, latest 8th century.
Clay bowl with Mandaean characters. These bowls, amulets, with incantations against demons, were buried upside down in the house to imprison demons and were widely used by Jewish, Christian and Mandaean people alike. It is thought that each inhabitant of the house had their own bowl made with their own personalised wishes, including for specific events. The text starts inside and is written in concentric circles towards the outside. In the Jewish Museum of Switzerland's collection, object number: JMS 1973-2, photographer: Dieter Hofer
