Description |
English: The snow covering Nisqually Glacier melts in the summertime, exposing deep crevasses which are more than 60 feet deep. For years, adventurous mountaineers have used Nisqually Glacier for ice climbing practice. Early tourist guides to Mount Rainier National Park promoted crevasse exploration as something anyone could do with little or no preparation or experience.
In this photo, probably taken in the 1920s, a mountain climber stands at the edge of a crevasse in the Nisqually Glacier at Mount Rainier National Park. He is holding an alpenstock, a long wooden staff used to probe the snow and aid in climbing.
