| Description |
English: Mammoth Cave National Park in south Central Kentucky is the world's longest known cave system housing more than 400 miles of explored regions. The vast chambers and complex labyrinths gave the cave its name. Archaeologists have found artifacts to indicate late Archaic and early Woodland peoples used the caves between 8000 and 1000 B.C. Europeans first discovered the caves around 1797. Today, great care is used to protect the caves from contamination by the more than half-million visitors each year who spend hours inside the cave on walking tours and floating on an underground river. |
